On October 19, 2026, our crew at Russell Quality Roofing replaced the roof for Lewiston Marine Corps veteran Franklin Wright. The Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project, Purple Heart Homes, and Best Built Builders Supply joined us to give him and his family a new roof. We’re glad we got to be part of it.
How the Roof Deployment Project Works
The Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project gives new roofs to military veterans and their families. It started in 2016. More than 850 military members have received roofs through the program since then.
A nonprofit partner helps select and approve each veteran. In this case, that was Purple Heart Homes, which provides housing solutions for service-connected disabled and aging veterans. The Owens Corning Foundation donates the roofing materials. A local contractor donates the labor and installs the roof.
About Franklin Wright
Franklin Wright is a Marine Corps veteran who lives in Lewiston with his family. This project began after our owner, Reuben Russell, spoke with Mr. Wright and then got in touch with Purple Heart Homes. Everyone agreed to come together and give him a new roof.
Mr. Wright knew his roof needed replacing. He didn’t know how much damage there was until the work started. He also wasn’t sure how he would pay for it. After the build, he thanked everyone involved by name, from the business owners to the people who worked on the roof.
Build Day
Our crew was on the roof Monday, October 19. A donated roof gets the same steps as any other roof we install:
- We tear off the old roofing completely and check the roof deck for damage before the new roof goes on.
- We use Owens Corning UDL 50 underlayment on every project.
- We put ice and water shield in the spots most prone to leaks. From October through March, we use a flexible version that bonds in cold weather.
- We plan ventilation for the building.
- We finish with a magnetic sweep for stray nails, to the best of our ability.
Who Pitched In
This was a true team effort.
- The Owens Corning Foundation donated the roofing materials through the Roof Deployment Project.
- Russell Quality Roofing donated the labor and installation.
- Best Built Builders Supply donated new gutters to finish the job.
- Purple Heart Homes partnered with us to bring the project to Mr. Wright.
Reuben told Big Country News, “I believe everyone needs to learn how to give instead of taking.” We’ve worked in the Lewiston-Clarkston area since 2007. Helping a neighbor who served feels like part of the job.
